Needle Aversion
Home > High Risk Information > Needle Aversion

Risk Issue:
Insurance medical examinations usually require a blood sample and some folks just don't like needles frequently because of past experience with "stabbing" in other examinations. Fortunately, a few companies will issue policies with what we call a "dip stick" approach. The medical examination service will have the applicant swab their tongue for oral fluids as an alternative to a blood draw.
Companies that accept the "dip stick," the oral fluid option, usually limit the amount of insurance to a specific amount, e.g., to $500,000 or less, and to younger ages. All other facets of the medical examination would then be normally completed (see medical examinations under Reference for more information).
Best Class:
The very lowest premium classifications of Preferred or Preferred Best, are offered by a few companies.
Solutions:
Avoid the multitude of companies that will not accept the oral fluid option. You may be able to stack insurance from two companies to increase the total benefit if there are limitations with one company. But, you may obtain a more competitive premium if you can endure a nominal skin prick.
