Preferred Plus - Qualifiers typically have no history of health impairments, no high risk occupation or avocations, take no prescription medication, have an excellent height weight ratio, and no immediate family history prior to age 65 of impairments such as heart disease or cancer and be a non-smoker.
Preferred - Acceptance guidelines for Preferred are less stringent than for Preferred Best. Individuals may qualify who take certain perscription medications, weigh more, and have limited family history of impairments.
Standard Plus - If you cannot quality for either of the above because of personal or family history, some insurance companies offer a rate between "Standard" and "Preferred" known as "Standard Plus." Again, you can be somewhat heavier and have more health issues but you would still need to be in generally good health.
Standard - If you cannot quality for any of the above because of personal or family history, "Standard" may be your classification. Controlled hypertension and cholesterol along with other commom health issues can normally expect a "Standard" classification. Sub-Standard - If you cannot qualify for standard rates due to issues with your health, occupation or advocation, insurance companies often make coverage available at an extra charge above the "Standard" rate. Guaranteed Issue - Several insurance carriers make coverage available with no medical questions and no physical examination. However, in addition to higher premiums, these policies typically have limited death beneifts for the first several years after the policy goes into effect.
About Smoker/Tobacco - All companies classify cigarette smokers as Tobacco users. Premiums are typically double the standard premium. A few companies will classify an applicant as non-tobacco if you quit at least 12 months ago. Others require a 2, 3, 4 even 5 years without usage. Some carriers allow "non-tobacco" rates for users of: cigars, chewing tobacco, pipes, smokeless tobacco, nicotine gum or a patch to quit.
