Risk Issue:
Cigar, chewing tobacco, the nicotine patch and a pipe smoker can be classified as non-smokers by some companies - are not considered high risk. Contrary to what you may have seen or been told, there are many interpretations of the term "smoker." Some companies will classify you as a smoker if you had a cigar at a wedding within the past year but otherwise never smoked. Unfortunately, many companies even consider use of a nicotine patch (to quit smoking) as constituting smoker status.
Further, some companies have a "Preferred Smoker" class for individuals who smoke cigarettes but less than a pack a day and are otherwise in excellent health. This special classification offers a lower premium than "Smoker." It does pay to do the research.

Certain types of tobacco use can be Preferred, the second lowest premium classification.
